Report on Academy in Kenya – 13 September 2012
Plant-for-the-Planet Academy in Nairobi
The third Plant for the Planet Academy in Kenya kicked off on a high note. The academy was sponsored and organized by the Plant for the Planet Foundation in partnership with Private Safaris East Africa, and hosted over 39 children drawn from different schools within Nairobi – the following schools were represented:- Thika Road Christian School, Loreto Convent Msongari, German School, Gospel Assembly School, Parklands Primary School, Cheleta Primary School, Kasarini Primary School, Hospital Hill and Visa Oswal primary school.
During the academy, the children had the opportunity to come up with concrete plans of action to be implemented at their various schools and communities. The plans included setting up of environmental and tree planting clubs, educating other students from their schools through making presentations and school newsletters.
At the end of the academy, the head of Operations at Private Safaris, Ms. Kellen Ndii, led the team in planting trees before awarding them with Climate Justice Ambassador certificates, “Although Private Safaris’ core business is in tour operations, the company is keen in supporting environmental sustainability projects and we believe it is our obligation to take part in conserving the environment. The children are the future and they can make the difference. ”, she said.
As Climate Justice Ambassadors, the children that attended the academy will be presented with the opportunities to give presentations, and to educate and empower other children to become Climate Justice Ambassadors as well. “I feel more knowledgeable and empowered”, said Nixon Chege, one of the participating children.Back
