The Academies of Plant-for-the-Planet was considered by Fundação Renova a great solution to prepare the generation which is going to inherit their work. That’s why on August 19th the city of Mariana hosted our first Academy in the region. Totally we had 94 participants from 28 local schools and some social projects, including participants with mental illnesses. For this Academy, a group of five youngsters from Mariana were prepared to host the activities. They adapted the presentation to their own reality and also the World Game, where they also reproduced the game in a map of their state, with infos about their regional population, money distribution and CO2 emissions. It was a great way to approach the children to the topic.
In the World Café and Project sessions they created three projects. One was about how to improve the recycling in the city. The second was a project to create a public tree nursery for the city and the last one was a project to organize task forces to plant one million trees in the regions impacted by the disaster. After the presentations, they decided to integrate all the projects: a tree nursery made with recycled materials (like plastic bottles) and the trees produced there are going to be used for the one million trees planting in the next three years. The mayor of Mariana, Mr. Duarte Junior, was there and already offered an area to the ambassadors for the tree nursery.
Because of the logistic, the tree planting was organized in a second day - September 2nd. In this day each ambassador planted one tree with a plate with their names. The trees were a Ipê, a native tree from Brazil. The chosen area is a famous walking and jogging area. So the inhabitants are going to have more shadows for practice their sports with these trees.
The new ambassadors are already talking about creating their own club to continue their project. The Academy had a great regional media coverage and because of that, some neighbor cities are already in contact asking for Academies there.
